The Rector writes……
Londoners unwittingly give up their first born child for free WiFi!
In June free WiFi hotspots were set up in busy areas of London but they were subject to some terms and conditions including a ‘Herod Clause’. This stated that the recipient must agree ‘to assign their first born child to us for the duration of eternity’. In a short space of time, six people had signed away their eldest child before the hotspot was shut down. Luckily for them the whole thing was an experiment by the Cyber Security Research Institute to explore the security issues of public WiFi use and to see if people read the small print in contracts! Needless to say, the clause wasn’t enforced.
Today we are bombarded by all sorts of information and offers over the internet. However I want to use the opportunity of this letter to point you in the direction of something very useful which is absolutely free and I promise there are no hidden ‘terms and conditions’! Last month a family member returning from a short holiday in Wales brought me some leaflets that were in the back of the church they had visited. They were produced by Gospel Imprint©. This is an organisation within Anglicanism that wants to share free resources with Christians who are seeking to learn more about their faith or who need pastoral help as they face certain difficult situations. The leaflets fall into three categories – Christian Faith, Christian Life and Christian Prayer. While they are produced for a Church of England audience, almost everything is applicable to us. In the coming weeks I will be putting a selection of them in the back of the churches for you to take. However if you want to look them up and print them off yourself they are available at www.gospelimprint.com Some of the topics I found particularly useful were ‘Becoming Who I Am’, ‘How Can I Pray?’, ‘Should I Go Back to Church?’, ‘Who is Jesus?’. If you or a friend have recently been bereaved the leaflet on ‘Beyond Death and Dying’ is very helpful. For those considering baptism, either for their child or themselves, there is also a leaflet on this.
Please look them up on your computer or look out for them in church. These are resources to help you in your Christian Faith. They are short, easy to read and aimed to help you. I promise they are free and there is no catch, not even in the small print!!
This month we have a very special event in the parish and a flyer about it is included with this mailing. Our ‘Harvest Songs of Praise’ at Rumley’s Farm is at 5pm on Sunday 12th October. It is something which will appeal to people of all ages and not just those with young children. The Passage West Folk Group will also be leading us in our praises. I look forward to seeing you for what will be a short act of worship with refreshments to follow. It is indoors in the large barn so don’t be put off if it is raining. We are very grateful to parishioners Ivan and Sandy Rumley for opening up their farm for this event. I look forward to seeing you there.
Yours in Christ,
Adrian.

Golden Jubilee Celebrations in St. Michael’s, Blackrock: On 19 October a special ecumenical service will take place in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Blackrock at 5pm to mark the 50th anniversary of the building of the current church. An earlier one was devastated by fire and had to be demolished. At the time the then rector Archdeacon Desmond Hutchinson, in a characteristic gesture of ecumenical hospitality, offered the use of St. Michael’s on Church Road. However in the end the Ursuline Convent Chapel was chosen as a temporary venue for worship in the parish until a new church was erected.
Ecumenical relations continue to be close to this day and we are delighted to be a part of the jubilee celebrations this month. All are welcome to the special service.
The next Old School Lunch takes place in Blackrock on Wednesday, 29th October at 12.30pm. All welcome.
Douglas and St FinBarre’s Scout Group are seeking new adolescents to join the Scout (12-15 yrs) or Venture Scout (15-17 yrs) sections. Both girls and boys are most welcome.
